Unprecedented Sh!t was released to rave reviews in May on DiFranco’s label, Righteous Babe Records. The album title not only reflects how dramatically different this 11-track album is from Ani’s previous work, but also serves as a commentary on the current political and social climate. Joined by producer BJ Burton, on Unprecedented Sh!t DiFranco experiments with different sonic elements, leading to a sound that feels both authentic and polished. Lyrically, DiFranco powerfully highlights reproductive rights (“Baby Roe”), patriarchal oppression (“You Forgot to Speak”), climate change (“Spinning Room”) and other urgent global challenges. A documentary on DiFranco’s rise entitled 1-800-ON-HER-OWN premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival this summer and continues to screen throughout the country. The film is a vulnerable look at her life today, as she struggles to balance artistry with the demands of family. In select markets, Ani DiFranco and director Dana Flor will follow the film with a Q&A. Those include: Milwaukee, WI on October 5, La Crosse, WI on October 7, Madison, WI on October 8 and Ann Arbor MI on October 9.
