Joe Henry - Tiny Voices
Release Date: September 23rd, 2003
She waited 15 years to do it. After countless self-produced albums, Ani DiFranco decided that she wanted to pair up with someone to co-produce her newest studio album, Knuckle Down. It’s no wonder that Joe Henry should be that someone, especially after you give Tiny Voices a spin.
This is the disc that led No Depression to declare, "Henry has become master of his own brainy genre, one that weds the fiercest, most private poetry to edgy sound pastiches incorporating everything from '70s soul and hip-hop to free jazz and avant electronics."
Henry says that he "favor[ed] discovery over self-expression" when creating this, his ninth album. He opens the doors for thumping, jangling hip-hop beats to party with a weaving New Orleans clarinet. He creates arrangements that are full and complete, yet tangible and immediate. What his past collaborator Brad Mehldau did for jazz pianists with Largo, Henry does for songwriters with Tiny Voices.
