Greg Brown - Slant 6 Mind
Release Date: October 21st, 1997
Maybe you recognize him from touring with Ani DiFranco and Gillian Welch a few years back. Perhaps you’ve heard his songs performed by Willie Nelson, Carlos Santana, Michael Johnson, or Shawn Colvin. But if you haven’t become familiar with Greg Brown yet, it’s about time you did.
Greg has a malleable, cavernous voice, which he employs with equal skill when grinding out foreboding songs of woe or delicately enveloping hymns of hope on his 1997 release, Slant 6 Mind, which earned him a Grammy nomination for Best Traditional Folk Album.
Praised by Rolling Stone as “a wickedly sharp observer of the human condition,” Greg is a songwriter’s songwriter with a world perspective that is full of insight and depth. Take the track “Mose Allison Played Here,” in which he pairs a diatribe about a hole-in-the-wall concert venue (puke on the floor, bad P.A. system, rude bartenders, and a crappy audience) with the seemingly sincere closing lines, “but as I set up I am proud to be here/because once last November Mose Allison played here”.
