On Mostly Ape, their second release on Righteous Babe Records, the New York City-based instrumental trio of Tony Nozero (drums), Brian Wolff (tuba) and Neal McKeeby (guitar) takes the already atmospheric sound of its past and arms it with groove-based, well-crafted song structures and slippery blips and bleeps. The result is an engrossing record full of both brightness and shadows – waves of soaring harmonies contrast with bass-heavy bouts of melancholy.
